To all GMs, I believe that we need a better rule for the FA signings. I am part of another GM Fantasy League which is also forum-based and I find their FA Signing rule better than what we have here. Here they are:
MAXIMUM CONTRACTS
The maximum contract that can be offered to a player during free agency is 6 conferences.
RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS
Every year, every player with an expiring contract will be considered a Restricted Free Agent. Each team will have the option to sign all Restricted Free Agents to contract extensions. Other GMs could offer a longer contract length with a higher salary based on the ERA to the player and the owner would be given 1 week to match the said offer.
All players not re-signed will be released into the Free Agency pool.
UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS BIDDING
GMs will post the initial bid on a player. There will be a maximum of 10 players on the board at a time. If 10 players are on the board, all other offers will be deleted.
The initial bid on each player will be at 1 month and $250,000 based on the players ERA. Each bid there-after will be made in 1 week and a minimum of $100,000 increments and can increase or decrease by 1 week or a minimum of $100,000 per bid. Any bid not meeting this criteria will be considered void, and Moderators will edit your bid to reflect that it is void. The maximum value for any contract offer is 6 conferences.
e.g.
First bid - 1967-68 Neil Johnson $239,000 @ 1 month
Second bid - 1966-67 Neil Johnson $$338,330 @1 month
If your bid puts you over the salary cap, then you will not be allowed to have that player. You will also face a penalty from the league. Penalties will be 25% of the salary cap. You will be required to immediately deduct this amount from your salary cap for the current season.
Once an initial bid has been made on a player, the player will remain on the board for 24 hours. This 24 hour period will be reset with each new bid. After 24 hours of inactivity in bidding, the player will be under contract of the team with the highest bid.
SNIPING RULE
Any free agent that is signed may not be waived or traded before the end of the round. Only after the current round will a team be able to waive or trade a free agent signing. Anyone who breaks this rule will lose their first round pick for the next season, as well as have their salary cap reduced by $500k for the next 3 seasons. In addition, a violating team will not be allowed to make any trades for the following season.
