WILD FINISH SEEN FOR THE 2ND ROUND OF ELIMINATIONS
Wahoo. I miss all of you. I think it was more than 2 weeks ago since I posted my last article. I got too tied up with so many things that I missed writing on my piece here. When I looked at it again, it was already winding down to the last 2 weeks of the 2nd round of eliminations. And it is shaping up to be a wild and wooly finish once more.
For the BIG 6 side of the league, I could see that only the top spot is firmly secured with the NETBURNERS continuing to dominate the entire league. What with a single loss in more than a month, this team is a shoo-in for the semis. After them, the wild rush is on.
The PIPERS are currently on 2nd with a 13-11 slate while 2 full games behind is the PANTHERS. Running 4th are the KINGS while the DOORS seems headed for the exit door. But wait, with 6 more playing days left, anything is a possibility for this mix. You see, if the PIPERS loses out on all of its last 5 games against their GREAT 6 rivals and the DOORS completes a sweep of their last 6 games, then the PIPERS could see itself going down the bottom of the standings. But that's a big IF. With the way the PIPERS has been racking up wins the past few games, I believe that although my first scenario is possible, it would be a longshot.
What's more interesting is the chase for the 3rd and 4th quarterfinals slot between the KINGS, the PANTHERS and the DOORS. With only 2 games separating the 4th and 5th placers and a solitary game between the 3rd and 4th teams, then this could be a cardiac affair. All of these 3 teams are on a rollercoaster ride in this round and 2 or 3 losses for any of them could be disaster. for the PATHERS and the KINGS to assure themselves of seats to the next round, they should be hoping to win at least 3 games in the last 6 playing days which would put them out of the DOORS reach.
Now, let's go to the much unpredictable GREAT 6 division. With a clear 4 game headstart against their closest pursuer, I could say that division pacesetter ORTIGAS ROCKETEERS is already holding a tight grip on that #1 quarters slot for their division. Even if they lose all their remaining 6 games, the worst they could end up is 2nd place on their division. So GM Bananaboy could relax and see who'll they'll face next.
For the 2nd spot, even if the KB24 TEAM lost yesterday and even if they lose all their remaining 6 games, the worst position for them would be 3rd which is enough to tow them over to the next qualifying round. With 16 wins, they are a full 6 games ahead of their closest pursuer.
Now, the 3rd, 4th and 5th slot is as interesting as their BIG 6 counterparts. With the BELIEVERS only a full game ahead of the AWAMITS, this could be a toss-up. Specially after the 25-point beating they had yesterday in their home loss to the KICK ASS team, everyone seems to have lost their belief that this team could go past the first round of the quarters. The AWAMITS on the other hand, are readily building up steam going on to the next round. And they sent the message across in their past few games that was punctuated by a 1 point upset of 2nd running KB24 team yesterday. What with an all-scoring first 5 of Isiah, TMac, LeBron, Dirk and Mikan, this team has the makings of a classic offensive machine. But most eyes are on the KICK ASS team.
Eventhough they are the division tailender, the KICK ASS team has literally kicked some ass the past few games. They have won 3 of their last 4 games which includes a 25 point demolition of the BELIEVERS yesterday. If not for Larry Bird's exploits, then the KICK ASS would have swept their last 4 games. A feat worth mentioning since this team almost got eliminated during the 1st round.
Now, what would be the best scenario for KICK ASS? If they win their last 6 games, the BELIEVERS loses 3 of their last 5 games and the AWAMITS loses at least 3 of their last 6 games, then they would be able to clinch at least a tie for the last spot for the next round. Now, if both the BELIEVERS and the AWAMITS win at least 3 of their last scheduled games, then it would be bye-bye for the KICK ASS.
